His name is Jabir and his surname is Abu Abdullah. His mother's name was Nusaiba. Hazrat Jabir's father's name was Abdullah, his grandfather was the chief of his tribe. Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah embraced Islam along with his father during the second Bait-e-Uqba. Hazrat Abdullah , the father of Hazrat Jabir was martyred in the battle of Uhud. Before the battle of Uhud, Hazrat Abdullah , the father of Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah called his son and gave him some pieces of advice: Son! I wish that I may become the first martyr of Uhud, and if my wish is fulfilled, then pay back the loan that is due on me and take care of your sisters. Allah Almighty accepted his wish and he was martyred in the battle of Uhud.
Hazrat Jabir executed his father's will and married a widow only for the purpose of educating and upbringing of his sisters and keeping the domestic system running smoothly. When his father was martyred, he was in debt. Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah says that when the dates of our garden ripened, so I came to the Holy Prophet and requested him to come to the garden and distribute the dates among the moneylenders and request some to forgive some loan so that the debt is paid by us. The Prophet went to the garden and ordered the dates to be gathered in one place and circumambulated three times around it. Then he ordered to distribute the dates, the debt was paid, but the pile of dates did not decrease and it remained the same. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 3580)
Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah decided to participate in the Battle of Badr and Uhud. But due to his young age, his father forbade him to participate in Jihad. He participated in the rest of the battles with great enthusiasm. He took part in 19 battles with the Holy Prophet. He was so fond of the knowledge of Hadith that he used to travel for months to listen to a single Hadith. Hazrat Abdullah bin Anees had a Hadith to narrate and he lived in Syria. When Hazrat Jabir came to know about it, he bought a camel and rode it to him and listened to that Hadith. This shows his love for knowledge. 1540 Hadiths have been narrated by him. A collection of the Hadiths of the Holy Prophet is attributed to him under the name of Sahifa Jabir bin Abdullah.
He started teaching Hadith in Masjid-e-Nabwi after completing education. People from Makkah, Madina, Basra, Kufa and Egypt acquired education from him. His circle of knowledge and teachings was particularly famous. People from far away cities used to come to him for attaining the knowledge of Hadith.
He used to travel a mile to offer prayer in Masjid-e-Nabwi . Hazrat Jabir led a very simple life. Once some Companions came to meet him at his house, he offered them vinegar and said; Start with the name of Allah a great virtue of vinegar has been described. If one's friends come to meet him, he should not be stingy or skimpy in what he has available. Similarly, the guest should accept it happily and should not look it down as there is destruction for both (guest and host) in this.
He was very steadfast, passionate, faithful, and righteous. He showed great courage and firmness in the battles with the Holy Prophet. He Passed away in 74 Hijri.
